Tyre Information – What You Need To Know
How to Read Tyre Sidewall Markings
-
TWI Indicator:
Indicates where the tread wear indicators are. When flush with the tread, your tyre is (or is about to be) illegal due to low tread.
-
Tyre Size Designation:
The number/letters showing your tyre’s size (width, aspect ratio, rim, load, speed). Vital for getting the right replacements.
-
Radial (R):
Shows the tyre is radial ply. “R” in the size marking also means radial.
-
Tubeless:
The word “tubeless” means the tyre doesn’t require an inner tube. 'E' or 'e' markings also indicate European type approval.
-
Tyre Name:
The commercial product or model name.
-
Safety Warning:
Always follow pressure and load recommendations. Improper mounting or use can cause serious injury.
-
‘E’ Marking:
All UK tyres since 1997 must have ‘E’ or ‘e’ marking, certifying compliance with EU/UK safety standards.
-
Directional Pattern:
Directional or asymmetric tyres have an arrow to show correct rotation. Fitting the wrong way can fail an MOT.
-
Manufacturer’s/Brand Name:
Not all tyres are created equal. For expert, impartial advice on the best brands, call 01744 808586.
-
Country of Origin:
Indicates where your tyre was made.

Reinforced: Means the tyre can carry a higher load than standard (common on vans, estates, caravans).
