What’s a Wet Belt?
A wet timing belt runs inside the engine, constantly immersed in oil. This design reduces friction, provides quieter operation, and can improve fuel efficiency.
However, constant exposure to hot engine oil and heat causes the belt material to break down over time. While Ford recommends replacement at 100,000 miles, in reality, many fail much sooner - sometimes as early as 40,000 miles.
When a wet belt begins to deteriorate, rubber debris can clog the oil pump and restrict vital lubrication, leading to severe engine damage or complete engine failure. That’s why proactive replacement is essential.
When to Replace Yours
If your Ford Focus is 5–7 years old or regularly used for short trips, it’s wise to have the wet timing belt inspected. Short journeys often mean the oil doesn’t fully heat up, which can accelerate belt wear.
We recommend replacing the wet belt between 80,000–100,000 miles - or sooner if any signs of wear are detected during inspection. Acting early can save you from costly engine repairs and keep your Fiesta running reliably.
