Where Sells Mobility Scooter Batteries In Merseyside : Mobility Scooter Batteries Merseyside

How long do mobility scooter batteries last? This is a common question both in-store and online.

The answer, like most, is not that straight forward and relies on a number of variables including the rate of use, charge times and how often your scooter is stood for. with mobility scooter batteries and provide tips and guidance about how to maximise their output and lifespan.

Battery types

There are typically two different types of mobility scooter battery, GEL and SLA (Sealed Lead Acid). These two types of batteries each have their own strengths depending on usage so although deciding on which to use could initially seem complicated there is a very basic reason why you may choose one over the other.

  • GEL – Produces more cycles and therefore can last a lot longer therefore recommended for regular (daily) users. This battery is considered to be the ultimate mobility scooter battery with unrivalled performance.
  • SLA (or often called AGM – Absorbent Glass Matt) – Produces fewer cycles, therefore, recommended for the occasional user. However, they are also a lot cheaper, therefore, represent excellent value for money with good performance.

All mobility scooter batteries are 12v and tend to be fitted in pairs providing 24v and it is recommended that when changing one you change the pair.

Charging

The charging of your mobility scooter battery is an often contentious subject with varying opinions about how and when to charge.

However, we recommend following the advice:

  • Charge after each trip as well as overnight.
  • Never allow the battery to be fully discharged.
  • In cases where the scooter is not regularly used it must be charged once per month as a minimum.
  • Alternatively, the battery can be left connected. It will not overcharge if you are using the correct charger.

Storage

  • Ensure that the battery is stored in a cool and dry place. Overheating will reduce effectiveness, output, longevity and delay recharging process. By the same reasoning avoid extreme cold. Try to store somewhere with a comfortable ambient temperature.
  • Always store the battery fully charged when not being used.

Overview

Although most manufacturers generally offer a 12-month warranty on batteries, mobility scooter batteries should deliver an average lifespan of up to 18 months depending on usage. In a ‘light’ mobility application such as using your scooter once or twice a week the battery can deliver up to three years lifespan, in a ‘heavier’ application such as using your scooter daily on long journeys, the lifespan could be between 12 – 18 months.

From our shop based in Merseyside St Helens, we offer a wide range of mobility scooter batteries all of which come with FREE fitting to get you moving again with the most minimal of fuss!
